A Quick Word

MS Paint at Work is a blog taking requests from its readers. If you have an idea, Sarah - the writer and artist - will do what she can to realize your idea by using MS Paint as her medium. If you have a wonderful drawing idea, send us an email at MsPaintAtWork@gmail.com

Space Animals

Fighting in Space

A fellow Sarah requested a RGB Lion and a CMYK Tiger fighting in space. Sarah is a cool cat who is working on getting into the production business. After seeing the previous blog post she request this wonderful image. Let me tell you, drawing lions is really tough. I was going to try and do a spin on my usual style and go with a picture more realistic, like this one. The problem is that I really can't draw, so then I looked up cartoon lions, which are adorable but not exactly threatening when fighting.
I'm Fierce!
So I had to improvise. It was a lot of fun drawing the two cats, but it definitely wasn't a piece of cake. I had issues because I draw the cats first, copy them, make the background, and paste them. Since I was at work, which would make since because this is MS Paint at Work, a student came in asking for help and the image got lost in the clipboard. I had a much more awesome version of this image, but it was lost in the clipboard world of Paint. So I had to re-draw it. And like an idiot, I was making the background and forgot to paste them before I copied one of the stars and lost the cats, so I had to start all over again. Though this picture was frustrating to complete, it turned out alright. Thank you Sarah and sorry for the delay!

Dragon Llama 2.0

Now with wings!

If you remember my previous post regarding dragon llamas, I promised the almighty Darara I would create a dragon llama with wings if he felt jibbed because the dragon didn't have wings. He informed me that he, of course, didn't feel jibbed, but he said a dragon llama with wings would be pretty sick. So I delivered, only because I have nothing left to do at work and it's barely 11. I also promised that if I did re-post the amazing dragon llama with wings, I would put in a snippet about how amazingly smart Darara is. Here it goes:

The Smartest Guy I know
Darara is the smartest guy I know.
He is humble, so it doesn't always show.
He is clever and funny, and sometimes pretty punny,
not to mention he Rick Rolled everyone at graduation.

He goes to Harvard, with lots of scholarships,
and stays super cool while he does it.
So if you see him around, don't put him down,
Because he is the smartest guy I know.

We took AP Chem together,
He was sharp, and always knew better
I almost failed, but I prevailed
because of Darara's help
Surely, he is the smartest guy I know.

Desert Nights

Spicing up a desert is tough work

Drawing deserts in general is tough work, but I always enjoy a challenge. This picture was requested by my friend Chris, who has suggested my previous masterpieces such as Kangaroos Can't Swim and The Blues Brothers which are also some of my first masterpieces. Chris requested a man camping in the desert. He was worried it would be too boring, but I don't often draw landscape images, so I decided to take his request. And he is a good friend, so I wouldn't want to disappoint him. I decided to use red tones in this particular desert because every desert I've seen (of the very few I've seen) has very iron-rich soil, making everything around it have an orange/red tint. I know most of these colors are looking more purple than red, but you have to remember it's nighttime, so everything at night is a darker color than how you would normally see it. The man camping is laying out underneath the stars. I imagine he is doing some deep thinking, most likely contemplating his navel. Thank you Chris for this challenging image.

Don't forget you can send me a drawing request to MSPaintAtWork@gmail.com. Things are really starting to slow down at work, so please give me something to do with your wonderful drawing ideas.

Happy Birthday Harlan!

It doesn't look like a happy birthday picture, but it totally is.

This post is dedicated to my high school chemistry teacher, Harlan. Happy Birthday Harlan!!! Not only did I have her for Pre-AP Chemistry, I had her for AP Chemistry as well. While having her as a teacher I discovered that I really sucked at chemistry. She convinced me to take AP Chem, and it was one of the smartest decisions I have ever made. I am pretty sure I failed almost every single test, but she reassured me that as long as I did my best work, gave it all I had, and kept asking questions, I wasn't going to fail. Her class taught me how to do my best, but also how to accept failure as an option. Harlan  taught me how to study and to never be afraid to ask questions. I feel as though I wouldn't be where I am in my college career now if I hadn't taken AP Chem and learned from the wonderful, albeit stressful, situations . I look up to Harlan as a role model. She has taught me to always strive for the best and never to settle with mediocre. I am glad that I have been able to stay in touch with her throughout the years. Thank you Harlan!

Wingless Dragon Llama

That happens to be terrorizing a bake sale.

My friend Darara, who is really smart, goes to Harvard, and I went to high school with, requested that I draw a dragon llama terrorizing a bake sale. The llama took way more research than I anticipated. You wouldn't realize the amount of time it takes to make a llama appear remotely fluffy. It's wingless because I was so focused on the fur and getting it finished (a day late) for Darara that I forgot to put on his wings. Darara, if you feel jibbed for having a wingless dragon llama, I will add the wings and re-post it with a snippet on how amazingly smart you are for coming up with the idea of a dragon llama (which I wouldn't have been able to think of if I was trying really hard to think of something creative). I had a ton of fun drawing the llama, fuzzy hair and all. Hopefully one day I will remember to look at my pictures a little more closely before I post them. Thank you Darara!

Fluffy Sheep with a Silly Hat

Fluff and Stuff

This darling picture was requested by my dear friend Vincent from Australia. He recently got back from a vacation in New Zealand. Whilst there he requested for me to draw a sheep with a silly hat on. Originally I thought I was going to go with a Chilean style hat, per Vincent's heritage, but after Google-ing Chilean hats, I found out they're nothing but simple straw hats. Certainly not silly enough for a close friend's request. I decided to go along the lines of a cake-tiered hat with lots of puff balls to help coalesce with the sheep's fluffiness. Sheep are cute, and drawing this sheep made me appreciate their cuteness even more. Thank you Vincent!

Finn and Jake on the Moon

Adventure Time!

I will be perfectly honest with all of you, I don't watch Adventure Time. I understand that it is really funny and clever, but it is not my kind of humor. I have watched a few episodes, and mildly enjoyed it, but I like drama shows more than funny shows. But, every once in awhile, I will enjoy a short episode here and there, but mostly I stick to NCIS and the X-Files on my Blu-Ray Player.  But my dear friend Nick requested I draw something Adventure Time related, and that if I didn't want to draw that, to draw moon/ocean stuff. I decided to combine both images and draw Finn and Jake on the moon. I really liked drawing Finn and Jake because they're super simple design wise, so it was pretty easy for me to mimic the artist's style. I like Jake more than Finn, because his nose was fun to draw. Thank you very much Nick!

Morbid Unicorn: WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT

A charming, morbid unicorn

My co-worker, another Sarah from Texas, requested a morbid unicorn with a head stabbed onto its horn after she saw my giraffe. I pleaded with her to let me not make it morbid, but she insisted it had to have a head on it. So I drew the unicorn like it didn't have a head attached to its horn, let her see it, and she remained firm in her request for the unicorn's decapitated friend. I am super duper proud of my unicorn because horses (and unicorns) are very difficult to draw, and spending two out seven days of my week with a horse named Dash, not getting the proportions right can be terribly frustrating. I am glad how this turned out (even with the gross and violent image). Thank you Sarah!

Forest Fairies and Bumble Bees

High Quality Work Ahead

My boyfriend requested a very difficult piece for me. A woodland fairy atop a speeding bumble bee. Thinking this would be a pretty easy piece in the beginning I was proven wrong when I tried to make the wings of the bee opaque. I actually had to work on this one at home, because MS Paint on Windows XP and lower doesn't have an opaque coloring tool like Windows Vista and higher does. I ended up having to color in each individual background color of the wings to make it work and took about an hour and half to complete. That being said, I probably won't do opaque wings again. Another difficult task was making sure the fairy was perched on the back of the bee correctly. I wanted to make sure you could tell he was on top of the bee rather than drawn in on the side, and it took a long while for me to figure out the best way to place him. Overall, I am pleased with this drawing, it just took longer than expected. Thank you again Stanton!

Fire Monsters!

"I am a terrifying Fire monster!!"

My charming darling requested a fire monster. I couldn't help but thinking of Calcipher from the wonderful movie Howl's Moving Castle. I attempted my first shot at fire, and I am pretty proud. With each passing drawing, it is getting easier and easier for me to draw. I am really looking forward to getting in more requests. If there is something you would like me to draw please shoot me an email at MsPaintAtWork@gmail.com. Thank you Stanton!.

300

Watch out for these mad art skillz

This is prime example of how much I suck at art. I feel bad because I cannot remember who request that I draw this scene from the movie 300. I remember it being a boy, and I remember drawing it, but I don't remember who requested it, so if it was you, let me know (I think it was Egan again...) Anyway! I decided I would look at the original once, and draw it from memory. I knew it probably wouldn't be my best work, but   I figured it wouldn't be too off, but it totally is. But that just adds to the character to the picture. He knew I couldn't draw very well, but I'm pretty sure they were pleased with the result. Please note muscly sword arm and wimpy shield arm. Much Thanks!

Morbid Giraffe: WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT

As graphic as a drawing in paint can be.

My online friend Egan, who lives somewhere in Canada, requested for me to draw an evil magician giraffe. He didn't specify how evil, so I figured I would make him pretty dastardly. I know this breaks one of my rules regarding violent situations, but you have to remember that there aren't very many evil giraffes out there, let alone ones capable of magic. I like the spots the most on my giraffe in this painting. I had trouble trying to figure out how to draw a giraffe, and he is not as successful as my previous hippo, kangaroo, and hamster, but I am pretty dang proud. I am also very fond of his bushy eyebrows. I don't like the person being sawed in half, but the evil was requested, so I delivered. Sorry if it grossed you out, but I had a wonderful time drawing it. Thank you Egan!

Vegetales, but with Real Vegetables

According to my co-workers, a tomato is indeed a fruit.

My co-worker Jessica, who lives in Texas, asked me to draw dancing vegetables. I was originally going to draw a picture very reminiscent of the wildly popular show Vegetales, but I realized that a tomato was a fruit and that I couldn't include a fruit in a vegetable drawing. That would be borderline racist. I enjoyed this painting a lot because I liked drawing the broccoli, which is surprising because I am not a big broccoli eater. I wasn't sure how vegetables dance, so I figured oscillating arms would be a safe bet. The music notes were a nice touch as well. Thank you Jessica!

Hippopotamus and Noodles

Noodles?

Jason told me to draw a hippopotamus with noodles on its back. Now, many of you will recognize this phrase from the wildly popular song "Noodles on my Back". When I created this image, I had never heard the song before. I realize now that even my boyfriend knew the song and I was somewhat oblivious to the popularity of the song. I obliged to Jason's request and not only drew a Hippopotamus with noodles on its back, I also drew a noodle with a hippopotamus on it's back. I like drawing hippos just as much as I enjoy drawing swimming kangaroos. (Please ignore the humongous typo on the noodle picture). Thank you again Jason!

Napal Was Here

Yes, I know Napal is spelled wrong

My coworker Jason, who lives in Texas, request that I draw the streets of Napal on facebook. So I googled Napal, but nothing came up because I had yet to realize Napal was spelled wrong. When I asked Jason what Napal was like, he told me to use my imagination, so I did. I decided that Napal was some pre-teen angst-ridden boy who was trying to channel some of his negative energy out onto the poor innocent street. Thus Napal street was born. I liked Napal's character the best. It was fun to draw a person and come up with their own characteristics. I was feeling extra creative that day. Thank you Jason.

Speaking of Boyfriends

I draw things for him too

My lovely and talented boyfriend requested I draw Pinkie Pie on a space ship in space. You might notice that I am not very good at drawing horse like things, because they are very hard to draw, so I asked for a revision, for anything but Pinkie Pie, because I didn't want to let him down. So he requested the same image but to replace Pinkie Pie with the Joker. So I did. Space is a hard thing to draw, and galaxies are even harder. But I got the Joker down pretty good. I like his hair the most. I made sure to make his suit extra big, but only because I forgot to draw his hands and feet. Thank you Stanton!

Happiness is:

Stuff!

After posting my pieces of art to my Facebook, I received my first real request. My friend Wendy, from Texas, requested that draw happiness. Now I know happiness cannot be represented by materialistic items, but these were all the things that helped contribute to my already pretty peppy self. There are few things in this world that bring me true joy, but driving my VW Beetle around town is one of them. I also enjoy my time horseback riding with my buddy Dash (Pictured below). I am sure you can see the resemblance between my drawing of Dash and the real Dash. I own a hamster named Pimienta (Spanish for "Little Pepper"). She is a Chinese Dwarf hamster and she is very sweet. I enjoy playing with her and listening to the little noises she makes at night. The last image is my boyfriend Stanton. He and I have been together for over a year and half and I spend almost all of my time with him. He is a voice over artist. These things all make me happy. Thank you Wendy!

Treats?
(Sorry for Potato Quality Picture)

Kangaroos Can't Swim

Another Image Suggested by Chris

This painting features another successful animal. After being disappointed with Chris's Blues Brother's request, I asked him for another drawing. He suggested a swimming kangaroo. Chris, somewhat lacking in creativity, doesn't know that Kangaroo's can't swim, so I made sure to detail that in my drawing. Striving for perspective, I used deeper colors for the background to show how the ocean was deeper and far away, but there is only so much perspective you can get on MS Paint. That aside, this was a fun image to draw, and I realized that I like to draw kangaroos because they're easy. Thanks again Chris!

The Cat in the Hat

Not to be Confused with Dr. Seuss

My friend Tessa, who also lives in Texas, requested a cat wearing a top hat and a bow tie with a martini in a business setting. I am really proud of that cat because this was the first animal I drew and the first time I was successful at it. Granted, there are times when I am not so successful, but we will get to those later. I decided that a work birthday party was the easiest way to depict a business setting. The cat wasn't going to start off sad, but with the droopy ears and whiskers, it evolved into a depressing image of a very common fear. I am not proud of the people in this painting. The perspective and the cat took so much time, and when I was finally ready to start throwing people into the mix, I got frustrated with how crappy they looked and gave up all together. Besides, the cat looks awesome, who cares about the people? Thanks Tessa!

Banana Hammock (No not that kind of Banana Hammock)

Get your mind out of the gutter

This drawing was requested by my friend Mike. He lives here in Texas and we have been friends since high school. This was my first attempt at scenery and a background, and it was harder than I anticipated. Using the spray paint brush on paint takes an amount of skill and layering. He sent me the original image and request that I draw it, so I did to the best of my abilities. Drawing bananas talking is tough work. This painting took me about 45 minutes to finish. Thank you Mike!

The Blues Brothers

My First Published Work

Just playing catch up. This painting was requested by my friend Chris. He is from New Jersey and asked for me to draw the Blues Brothers on my first day of drawing. As you will see, my artistic style has greatly improved, but it's pretty dang good for a first post. I have never watched the Blues Brothers, so when I looked them up, I decided to take a step away from the norm considering this image falls under that category of "boring pictures." No offense to you Chris. But, I drew it anyways because I didn't have anything to do that day. Thank you Chris!

A Quick Word

Good afternoon all.

This blog is featuring all the original content that I draw while I'm at my incredibly boring and uneventful job. I work as a student assistant at my school and during the summer there isn't much to do, short of making lists and then having to remake it when my superior decides she doesn't like it anymore.

Though my job may sound exciting, I really need something to pass the time. Starting back in June, I began taking requests to draw pictures on Microsoft Paint. Since all my computers at work are equipped with Windows XP, I have the original, simplistic, amazingly difficult to master, MS Paint. The Windows Vista (and higher) paint is definitely wonderful, but it truly lacks the finesse that MS Paint on Windows XP utilizes.

That being said, my drawing skills are somewhat lacking. My sister is an amazing artist going to school and majoring in art education, so feel free to compare my art to hers, and you will see that I am a fairly incompetent creator. When you look at my beautiful creations, please look at them with an open mind and realize that I'm not really an artist, and I'm just using my time at work to draw crappy pictures.

I am open and willing to taking requests, but there are a few guidelines that I would like to stick to:
  1. I will not draw anything sexual or gross. Whether it is an innuendo, disgusting, or both, I will not draw it. All of these images are seen by grandmothers and neither of them would appreciate seeing sexually explicit drawings.
  2. I try to refrain from drawing anything too violent. If it is violent it has to be a situation regarding impossible circumstances, i.e. a unicorn with a decapitated head on it's horn, a evil magician giraffe sawing someone in half. I like to keep my drawings as fun and friendly as possible and I do not particularly enjoy drawing things that are morbid and dark.
  3. Keep it interesting. If you ask me to draw a portrait of your beautiful-self, I will most likely kindly decline drawing it. My "art" is very unrealistic and I don't want to smash any one's hopes and dreams of a beautiful selfie.  I might oblige, but I cannot make any promises. I also don't like to draw boring scenes. If you ask me to draw something like "a beautiful camping scene" I won't have very much fun drawing it. Not that camping is boring (which it is), it's that the scene itself is plain and too simple.
  4. Remember that I draw these pictures when I have nothing do to at work. I try not to spend too much time on my computer at home considering I spend 20 hours of my week on a computer drawing on paint, and I like to limit my time to keep it entertaining. Realize that if you request a drawing, it might be  a day or so before you get it. I can only draw so fast, and when I am at work, my job comes first, and even though it is usually a slow day, and I can occupy my time with drawing on paint, sometimes there is work I actually have to do. I appreciate your understanding.
Other than these few guidelines, please feel free to request a drawing from me by sending me an email, and I will see what I can do. I am looking forward to all the requests that will come pouring into my inbox and I hope you enjoy these pictures as much as I enjoy drawing them.
